ADAS diver are also awarded academic qualifications under the national vocational education and training arrangements

ADAS diver are also awarded qualifications under the national vocational education and training arrangements (the Australian Qualifications Framework - AQF, in recognition of the academic aspects of their ADAS training.

See the ADAS Training and Assessment Code of Practice (at "INFORMATION FOR DIVERS" on this website) for advice about ADAS policies and procedures in the conduct of such training.

Vocational education and training (VET) is 'education and training for work'. It exists to develop and recognise the competencies or skills of learners.

Vocational qualifications are awarded in recognition of the skills and knowledge needed to achieve competency in a particular area, rather than on the type or length of a course that has been undertaken. This means that they make it easier for employers to work out what a person with a particular qualification can do. For more information on vocational education and training, visit the website of the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) (www.anta.gov.au).

The ADAS ADvanced Diploma of Occupational Diving is a vocational qualification under the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF). The Advanced Diploma focuses on personal and professional development to prepare divers with the skills and abilities to manage diving operations or to train occupational divers.

The Advanced Diploma is a comprehensive diving qualification, with exit points at various levels (Certificate III , IV and Diploma level) and multiple streams to any of the qualifications which form the Advanced Diploma

  • Training and assessment (the normal method for obtaining ADAS accreditation, where trainee divers undertake formal training and assessment courses at one of the accredited ADAS Diver Training Establishments).
  • Recognition of current competencies (divers who can demonstrate existing relevant experience and knowledge may be able to claim credits towards an ADAS qualification).
  • Off-the-job learning (aspects of the Advanced Diploma pathway may be undertaken by distance learning methods, allowing the student to work at their own pace and at a time and place convenient to them).
  • Workplace-based learning (aspects of the ADAS Advanced Diploma pathway require the student to gain nominated on-the-job experience to fulfil the requirements of the qualification).

Certificate III and Certificate IV in Occupational Diving Qualifications

AQF  Certificates are a national vocational education recognition of the first step in the pathway towards the Advanced Diploma of Occupational Diving.  Qualification in one of the diving Certificate  (marked * below) is a necessary first step in the relevant stream of the Certificate IV and Diploma pathways.

These Certificates complement rather than replace the internationally recognised ADAS Certificate of Competency (the ADAS Card) which is the actual qualification required to comply with Commonwealth and State and Territory legislation.

They are organised to reflect the various streams of the ADAS qualifications, recognising that occupational divers operate in a number of different diving environments, using quite different equipment and techniques (eg, SCUBA or surface supply, air or mixed gas, deep or shallow, construction or aquaculture, surface oriented or saturation).

Divers who undertake certification as a Scientific Diver will be awarded a Certificate III.

The Certificate IV qualifications available to ADAS divers are:

*SCUBA Underwater Work to 30m - (ADAS Part 1)
*Surface Supplied and SCUBA Underwater Work to 30m - (ADAS Part 2 Restricted)
*Advanced Underwater Work to 30m - (ADAS Part 2)
